"A Holistic Approach to Mathematics Teaching"

Holistic Learning is an approach being used by the mathematics teacher in teaching mathematics wherein the focus is on the pupil’s needs, abilities, interests, and learning styles. Through this approach in teaching mathematics, the teacher can easily acknowledge the pupils voice. This is a must to the learning experience for every learner. Holistic learning will require pupils to be active, responsible participants in their own learning.

 Methods and Strategies

Games have procedures which employs skills and/or chance and has a winner. It predominantly used to practice and reinforce basic skills, additionally can be used to introduce new concepts and develop logical thinking and P.S. strategies. It is usually highly motivating. Generally, pupils enjoy playing games. It is more likely to generate greater understanding and retention. Games are an active approach to learning. Good attitudes to math are fostered through games

Co-operative grouped learning is a method of organization than a specific teaching strategy. Here, pupils work in small groups encourage to discuss and solve problems. Management of time and resources both as individuals and as a group should be considered. Teacher moves from group to group giving assistance and encouragement, ask thoughts provoking questions as the need arises. Method allows pupils to work together as a team fostering co-operation rather than competition. Provides for pupils – pupils discussion, social interaction, and problem-solving abilities.

Recap is one of the daily routines in the class that is initiated by the assigned student. It aimed to let the student share the important, vocabulary and processes or operations in mathematics related to the topic that was discussed on the last day. Through this, the student would be able to comprehend, speak and improve his/her English speaking skills. This also serves as a short review and at the same time, a connector to the new topic to be discussed during the day.

Vocabulary and Spelling tests are to be given to students as an evaluation of how they understand each word related to the subject matter. The spelling tests determine the pupil’s ability to write the vocabulary words correctly. Both tests are given to the students at the same time to promote pupils realization of each unfamiliar word being used in the discussion. The result of this would be the student's ability to upgrade their English speaking skills by having a large English vocabulary related to Mathematics.

Power Point Presentations are  prepared by the teacher. It is a wonderful way of presenting lessons. It is a technology integrated into the lesson that will make the learning flow smoothly resulting in a better understanding of the students. The lesson presentation through it will make the lesson highly organized. Included in the power point presentation are the essential questions that will encourage the students to think about their prior knowledge on the topic. It also contains examples, definitions of terms and exercises.

Customized Worksheets and Activities were also made and used by the teacher. It helps his students thoroughly absorb the particular math topic. It also ensures that the students know the concepts and processes from front to back and front again. This familiarizes them with different situations where the concept can be applied. With math worksheets, the students will be very comfortable with test-like formats. They will also learn how to manage time well in solving a problem and familiarizing concepts. This way, when actual tests come, they will not have difficulties in time limits. Panicking and getting rattled in tests due to time limits bother their concentration, so they are definitely best to avoid. This will really help the students to master the subject being taught by the teacher.

Special Activities are provided to the students to enhance mathematical ideas, additional knowledge and processes. Through special activities, the students will be able to answer questions related to the topic that was discussed by the teacher more comprehensively. It will also serve as a basis through which the student’s prior knowledge will turn into the acceptable new knowledge. A special activity could be a contest between the boys and girls or in a group. It could also be a group quiz show, spelling bee or a handout.

Grouped Workings were utilized by the teacher to increase the pupil’s ability to cooperate and learn from others, thus enabling them to take responsibility for their own learning and reducing reliance on the teacher. With this, the teacher has to organize the classroom to facilitate cooperative and collaborative learning between the pupil to pupil and between the teacher and the pupil. This happens by providing all pupils an opportunity to be equally involved in the classroom activities.
